Pregnancy and Paediatric Care

At Sandy Clark Chiropractic, we focus on providing natural healthcare for the entire family. We strive for greater health and balance throughout our lives and to do this we believe that the earlier you are assessed for nervous system problems, the more easily you may be able to manage life and its challenges.

Baby shoes on pregnant bellyThere are a number of reasons why a woman may choose chiropractic care during pregnancy, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Headaches and neck pain
  • Pelvis or pubic bone pain
  • Hip problems
  • Baby position questions
  • Poor range of movement

Adjustments are very gentle, focused and specific to what may help your body most. Before we ever perform an adjustment, we’ll take a health history to learn more about your past and future goals.

With chiropractic care women may experience more comfortable pregnancies with more energy and better sleep.

Care After Pregnancy

We invite our patients to continue chiropractic care after giving birth. Many women have found it helpful for readjusting their bodies to optimal function post baby. The choice, however, is entirely up to you.

Dr. Sandy with infantYou may be wondering why your child would need to see a chiropractor. A lot of kids have spinal issues that result from in utero positioning or birth trauma. That trauma can result in things such as

  • The inability to turn their neck to feed properly
  • Difficulty swallowing correctly
  • Difficulty in rolling over, crawling, sitting, and standing
  • Posture control problems
  • Lack of coordination during sport

We believe that chiropractic care offers a gentle, effective and drug free approach to children’s health care.

As children mature and begin to walk, climb and play sport, they may occasionally have falls, or sports or musculoskeletal injuries that respond to chiropractic care.

We are able to provide child specific exercises to improve movement, strength, balance and function.

Newborn Babies

The birthing process can put a tremendous amount of stress on your baby. Even if you have had a natural and uncomplicated birth, we encourage our clients to bring their child in to have their nervous system checked. A Chiropractor assess for issues of the neck, spine and reflex system associated with normal growth and development that could affect feeding, sleeping or unresolved crying.

Growing Children

As children get older, they go through milestones like learning to crawl, walk and ride a bicycle. Every time a slip or fall happens, it’s a microtrauma that affects the body. If ignored, these interferences in the nervous system can manifest as symptoms. If you have an older child, it’s never too late to begin chiropractic.

Why You Should Start Care Early

The birthing process can put a tremendous amount of stress on a baby. Births can result in a misalignment of the top bone of the spine. Even if you have had a natural and uncomplicated birth, we encourage you to bring your child in to have them checked.

Children are not just ‘little adults’ and care should be provided by practitioners who have extensive knowledge of how little bodies differ from adults. They need to be able to identify normal development and the many different conditions that may commonly present, and know when to refer to paediatric health specialists.

What is children's chiropractic?

Children can have musculoskeletal problems just like adults.

As children mature and begin to walk, climb and play sport, they may occasionally have falls, or musculoskeletal injuries from sport that may respond to chiropractic care.

We are able to provide child specific exercises to improve movement, strength, balance and function.

What can I expect on my visits?

At their initial consultation we suggest allowing around an hour for your first visit with your child.

This allows enough time for you to fill in the paperwork, for us to do a thorough head to toe examination, and for us to explain how we may be able to help, and treatment if appropriate.

Treatment will only occur with full consent of the care giver. Should you refuse treatment at any stage, then your wishes will be fully respected, and the consult will cease.

Do I need a referral to a chiropractor from a GP like a referral to a Paediatrician?

No. You do not need a referral to see a chiropractor.
How safe is chiropractic?

Just like physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage or even medications for your child from the GP, there may be some material risk.

If you have any concerns about the safety of chiropractic, please feel free to discuss these concerns with us.

Is chiropractic painful?

We understand that pain can be subjective and in general if it hurts then we stop. What we really want to know is Why does it hurt? How long will it hurt for and what else can be done about it? That is what the chiropractor is assessing for. We always use techniques that are age-appropriate. With infants, we use even lighter force or other techniques that involve zero pressure. It’s been our experience that most children find their treatments enjoyable.
